First, let's answer the question: What is a good FOUNDATION and how do you know if you have it or not?

A good foundation starts with being able to get to multiplication facts quickly and that you understand how to add and multiply fractions. These are the key pieces that can help any student to excel. Students will learn other foundational skills as math gets more advanced and mastering multiplication and fractions are KEY.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A GOOD FOUNDATION?

Can you get to 6•8=48 without having to use a calculator or adding up 8+8+8+8+8+8?

This question can be asked with each fact. If you can't get to an answer within a few seconds, then this is a big clue as to why a student struggles.

If you have mastered multiplication, then do you understand how to add and multiply fractions?

If you answer 'NO' to either of these questions, then mastering these skills is KEY to all of math.

There's nothing wrong with that if a student is a third grader.

But what happens when a student is 13 or 14 or older and they want to master the foundations of math? It's so easy to get bored and discouraged, especially when you've been struggling for years.

A student that's been frustrated with math for years doesn't need to practice 1•1=1 but this is what they will get when looking for resources.
